Why do atheists misinterpret the phrase "freedom of religion" to mean "freedom from religion"?

It's actually freedom from other people's religions. The Machusetts colony were Puritans who came to the "New World" to escape persecution for the practice of their religion and they promptly proceeded to persecute the Quakers among them.
