Does anyone know why freemasons care so much about Hiram Abiff?

Just wondering what he did that was so special besides being the architech of Solomons Temple. Did he teach wisdom or have some connection with God or was he just another skilled mason? With all the history channel shows about masons that have come out I am curious.
